Blog :: The Empty Cherries
Recent reports have come in that what appeared to be a bumper harvest has turned into a nightmare for many farmers in El Salvador. Rains coming very late in the season have led to the non-development of coffee beans within a high proportion of the cherries. When coffee cherries are picked they are usually sent through water troughs. The heavier ones containing the beans sink to the bottom leaving the 'floaters' on the surface to be removed.
Image the horror of seeing nearly all of your cherries floating and virtually nothing sinking to the bottom. This is what farmers in El Salvador have experienced and a very much reduced crop is predicted for this season which will surely affect the prices next year.
We have plenty of our El Salvador Pacamara in stock until March/April but after that things look uncertain. The Pacamara bean is one of the hardest to grow commercially and some farms may turn to less demanding bean types. We will endeavour to continue offering this very popular coffee in 2012. Until then if you haven't tried this coffee I recommend you do so before long.
