September 2010

This summer we have introduced one new coffee from Cuba, a new estate coffee from Kenya and have a new consignment from Costa Rica, plus two very unusual teas from Laos, and a new Darjeeling Garden Mark:

COFFEE

NEW Cuba Superior Lavado. It is several years since we last featured a coffee from Cuba. As a medium roast it is mellow and smooth without any acidity. Dark roasted it becomes stronger with a deep rich, earthy character. We recommend it black or with hot milk or cream.

NEW Kenya Estate Mutindwa is grown in the eastern part of Kenya close to the Meru district. Like most Kenya coffees it has a distinctive aroma and bright, acidity. We roast it either medium or dark, the medium roast being more acidic than the dark and more suitable for drinking with milk. The dark roast is best drunk black or with a little cream or milk.

Costa Rica Tarrazu Hermosa. Introducing a new consignment of very high quality Costa Rica coffee. Grown at high altitude in the Dota county of Tarrazu, which is located one hour thirty minutes south of the capital, San Jose. Produced by Cafecoop co-operative farmers whose brand name is Hermosa. A coffee with a beautiful complete character, which has pleasing body, with a sweet to delicately sharp finish.

TEA

The Paksong tea garden is something of a hidden gem of the tea world. The only tea garden in Laos, it was planted from the seeds of wild growing tea trees. According to the garden's history, tea from these wild trees was highly prized by the Chinese Emperors for its quality and flavour. Entire trees would be cut down to obtain the choicest leaves, which would be reserved for the imperial family. This wild variety of tea has been spared from rigorous cultivation and thus produces leaves of exceptional and complex character with particularly high levels of antioxidants. They are Fairtrade Certified and only 30 tonnes are produced in total each year, making this a truly rare tea. This tea is available in two versions.

Paksong Wild Excelsior Black. A very expressive golden black tea, naturally smoky with a hint of spice. The tea is wrapped in banana leaves as it oxidises, resulting in its unique flavour. Brew for 3 minutes and use water that is just off the boil.

Paksong Wild Excelsior Green The green tea gives a refreshing infusion which is complex in character. It is naturally sweet with subtle floral notes and buttery undertones. A quick brewing tea, it is best steeped for two minutes at most with water at around 70 degrees centigrade. The leaves will give three good steeps of increasing quality.

Darjeeling Garden Mark Castleton is a delightfully aromatic tea with a muscatel aroma. This tea garden is in the South Kurseong valley at an altitude of between 1600 and 3700 feet above sea-level. Best drunk black or with a little lemon, it makes a wonderful afternoon tea. Brew for 4 minutes.
