Costa Rica San Jose - Mr Higgins Recommends

Welcome to the first of my Mr Higgins Recommends for 2024. January can be a challenging month; the festivities of Christmas and New Year are behind us, and we still have the Winter months of January and February to contend with. March then comes over the horizon with its promise of Spring.

So to begin the year, I think we should commence with a coffee that is renowned for its superb quality and bright tasty flavour: Costa Rica San Jose. Costa Rican coffee is considered to be some of the best in the world, only the finest beans are exported from the country that in the coffee world, is often spoken of as “the little Switzerland of Central America”.

Our Costa Rica San Jose is grown by farmers in the Coopedota Cooperative Hermosa in the Dota region of Tarrazu. This farm was visited by my son David Higgins (who wrote about his experience in this blog), where not only are the best coffees produced and farmers helped financially, the aim is to create a thriving local economy where young people are encouraged to stay for a future in the area and not move away to the city.

Costa Rica San Jose has a bright lively flavour. Look for the gentle acidity that I think blends to almost a sweetness on the palate and the delicate fruity notes. A coffee that prepares well in most coffee makers, but especially by pour over filters. Enjoy it black, or with milk or cream at any time of the day.

I hope you have a good January and enjoy Costa Rica San Jose.

Sincerely,

Tony Higgins

Mr Higgins Recommends - Peru Inambari

Peru is renowned not only for its dramatic landscapes but also for its exceptional coffee. This October, Mr Higgins recommends Peru Inambari, an Organic and Fairtrade coffee from Caijamarca. Dark roasted to enhance its smooth, full-bodied richness, it is a versatile choice—perfect at breakfast, mid-morning, or as a refined after-dinner cup.

Mr Higgins Recommends - 1942

Created by David Higgins as a tribute to his grandfather, our 1942 Blend carries the story of a family business born in wartime London. From an attic roastery five flights up, to the rich aroma drifting across Oxford Street, Tony Higgins recalls the moments, the rituals, and the first cups of the day that shaped his life in coffee.

Mr Higgins shares fond memories, tasting notes, and the storied journey of this exceptional origin.
